The Garai family received the castle of Csesznek as a gift from King Sigismund I in 1392. However, the residential tower was probably not to their liking, so they started to demolish it at the end of the 14th century. In its place, on a rock overlooking the settlement, they built a gothic castle in the style of the period. There is no precise information about when construction began, but a stone from the site, inscribed in Latin and written in Gothic letters, is still preserved in the National Museum. It is because of this extremely valuable artefact that we can say with certainty that the construction of the castle of Csesznek, which still stands today, was completed in 1424, so this year we are celebrating the 600th anniversary of the building of the Garai castle.
A Monument to Honor the Anniversary
A scaled replica of the Wathay Watchtower was built to commemorate the milestone. Construction began in November 2024, and by early December, the tower was nearly complete, showcasing medieval charm.
Community Effort
Supported by the Municipality of Csesznek, the Magas-Bakony Tourism Association, and local volunteers, the monument reflects history, tradition, and community spirit. Official inauguration is set for December 2024.
